Sharpness comparision of Tamron 70-300 VC USD with Nikon 70-300 VR - koulang - 10-01-2010

I want to purchase a lens at 70-300mm range. IQ is my most important factor to go for, but I have limited budget. I found the new Tamron 70-300mm VC was really interesting. I wonder how is the the lens compared to Nikon 70-300mm VR at 300mm wide open?

Please recommend me!

I can recommend the new Tamron 70-300 VC lens. I have just bought one for my D300s and it is great at all focal lengths, much better than the Nikon from 200mm on. There has been a lens test done for this lens at "Le Monde de la Photo" magazine using the DxO software and it fully confirms what I am saying. http://www.lemondedelaphoto.com/-Tests,4-.html

Good luck! Kindly Vieux Loup

The Vieux, I will buy this one. This is very helpful review, but I can't read French. However I can see sample images and image charts. From what I catch up is at 300mm wide open is nearly excellent. 300mm F5.6 is my most use.

It sounds like all reviews are positive. I wonder if the lens is very sharp at 300mm F11, it will be interesting to do Macro photography. I imagine 300mm will produce extremely beautiful blur. So can this lens be used with lens mount adapter?

Lens mount adapter? What do you mean?

May be, he means a macro extender.

Whateve he means, I can also confirm that the lens is no macro lens <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' /> It has a nice boukeh and can certainly be used for portraits, but not for macro photography.

But you can put a macro "filter" lens on it, like a Canon 500D on it

Or you can put extension tubes between lens and camera body, so that the focussing range collapses and you can focus much closer (with resulting extra magnification).

I am sorry for making you confuse. I wanted to write tripod mount adapter! I know this lens is not 1:1 macro, but I wonder when we shot not too small objects like flowers? As I found in most reviews, this lens produces great image quality at f11 at 300mm, so if I zoom all the way to 300mm to shot macro, it may give very attractive background blur, but doing macro requires tripod's work even with great VC, so why I have this question.
