Forums > Back > next PZ lens test report: Sigma AF 150mm f/2.8 EX HSM DG APO macro OS (EOS)
#1
A ... super-apochromatic lens!

The bokeh could be a little better though.

Works well with the EF 1.4x III converter. The EF 2x III has its issues (no phase AF, reduced performance).

Thanks for the review... Interesting to see that the LoCA is reported a bit different than in D3x version...

The test shot with the D3x shows halos even @f/4... But 5D-II shot shows almost nothing and it is the magnification I guess.

I'm guessing you meant successor instead of predecessor in the first paragraph (3rd sentence) :-p

The D3x test was about the old non-OS version-

"Accurate manual focusing a bit tricky though because the focus path is relatively short for a macro lens. "

1. How much is the MF rotating angle?

2. Do you mean that you have MF problem during the target test or when you perform target/resolution test?

The non OS version rotates 270 degree and I find it just good enough for MF at macro distances. The infinity setting is different story.

PS Nor of macro lenses are good here. E.g. tokina 100macro rotates more than 270 degree while the difference between 3m ant infinity is just few degree.

Sigma 150 non OS is just a little bit better. With a little care I can focus maunaly for porthraits and landscapes shoots.

I don't mentioned canon 100 macro non L - it rotates just 170 degree from MFD to INF.

Just go for the APO Lanthar ... you will keep on pulling forever there. ;-)

I will need to check. However, it was quite a nightmare to test the Sigma due to the focus characteristic. However, that was at non-macro distances anyway.

Yes, sorry, corrected.

Did you make the tests at 1:1 or 1:2?

The sharpness tests are taken at a considerable distance (about 8 meters is my guess), and the bokeh tests clearly are not at macro distances either.

So, I think the answer is no?

It is technically next to impossible to do formal macro tests ... at least within reasonable financial efforts.

I will do an APSC test during the next few days and add a couple of macro samples in this scope. The few macro samples that I took looked very nice though.
