E-P3 + 12/2 + 20/1.7 + 45/1.8 creates a very small setup. It has a nice balance of size, weight and IQ. Going smaller is a silly move IMHO. Smaller bodies will probably be less comfortable to operate and smaller sensors will have worse IQ.

Thom Hogan has an interesting take on these matters, posted today

About that calculation for signal-to-noise ratio... Is that so simple to calculate it (based on the sensor size)?

PCs are on a sharp decline. Frankly I would be surprised if they are still mainstream beyond 2015. Their time is over ... just like DSLRs. ;-))
I WON"T EVER want to edit my photos on a 10.1" tablet.

I am sure few out there will...

And at least within the scope of Nikon, I loosely agree with Thom's analysis. Nikon are aiming their small(er) sensor mirrorless at a different point than the DSLRs. They think there is room for both to coexist. Maybe other competitors like m4/3 or Sony will be bigger threats to low end DSLRs but no one has come up with a FF DSLR replacement. Yet.
I am not certain how big that market between low end DSLRs and high end compact cameras is.

Nikon is betting on their reputation. They think people will buy based on their name alone.

Personally, if I am looking for something around that size, I'll spring for something from Sony, Panasonic or Olympus. Folks hoping to move up from compact cameras want to see a quantum improvement in image noise and dynamic range.

I believe the key word will be the price tag... It will be an interchangeable lens design and the (not so low) lens prices of Nikon will be added to the system. Who needs such a system if it would be more expensive than m4/3?

a) Nikon DSLR users will tend to purchase a Nikon nano-system rather than something else

<img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' /> it's still smaller than MFT

They would "tend to" buy a Nikon, given that an adapter for existing Nikon lenses will be the cure... And that's acceptable... But unfortunately, being smaller than m4/3 doesn't mean that it should be -comperatively- cheaper.

Frankly, photography equipment (just like e.g. cars) is a religious market. We are also seeing this here in the forum where people insist that system A is better than system B - which is usually rubbish on a global basis, of course. In religious markets user may add/change products but stick to one brand. Exceptions apply of course.

My only concern at this point is that the sensor seems quite recessed in the mount, in relative terms. Might make the use of some adapted lenses harder.
