Actually I might have misunderstood you because I don't know the insides of the Canon metering system. But in any case I find it quite convenient to choose/lock metering over any spot I want. This gives me a flexibility (limited by the AF points seen in VF). And if the point that I choose is also suitable for focusing at (concerning the near/far DoF limits), this is the fastest way for me to meter, compose and release the shutter.
