The effect of lens choice on the 5D3's AF
#12
Again my use might be niche, but in wildlife, you don't often get to choose the light, and it doesn't often stay stable - sun moving in and out of clouds, subjects moving in and out of shade. If I meter on the subject, it will be near enough right with compensation, and with experience you know how much compensation for a given subject. The background can be very different from the subject so if I use that, I need extra caution.

Having said all that, I don't often use small spot metering now. On the old 50D I used the traditional trick of centre targeting and post crop. The 7D AF gives more flexibility for off centre tracking so I don't use spot metering any more, and use "if in doubt, under-expose" instead. I've got better at shadow fishing.
