Even before the Sony partnership, it was most likely a licensing issue with Sony. And Canon, Nikon and anyone else... I don't know how much you can patent or otherwise restrict the use of in a connected lens, but look at Sigma and Tamron. Both have had lens electronic communication issues with the body to various degrees over the years.
