The new Canon suggests that a D4 Nikon at 18MP should be able to easily gain a stop in high ISO performance over the D3s - unless the Canon actual performance at those levels is unexpectedly poor, which is unlikely.
If that is true, then those who wish for Nikon to stick at 12MP for a D700 follow-on (not the D800, of course, different camera, different objective) need not worry if 18MP is chosen. Sensor technology has moved-on again. So those pixel pitches which give the spectacular high-ISO performance are likely to be redefined.
I could see 18MP emerging as the 'standard' sensor spec for most FF DSLRS, and staying there for some time. The more specialised 'studio/landscape' DSLRS (like D800, maybe 5DII replacement) could actually appeal to non-pros more, because of lower price, ability to crop instead of buying a big tele, and in Nikon's case retained use of DX lenses using 18MP of that pixel-rich sensor.
Time will tell... fascinating to speculate. And it costs nothing.
