You can use that for both, and you do not have to use it for either. It just gives you the flexibility might the need arise.
I would like it to be able to go down to f2.8 instead of f5 at 50mm when shooting a portrait with it, for instance. Or use f2.8 when shooting in lower light with for instance a moving person.
It is like everything on a DSLR, really. It is nice to have something if the need arises.. Like live view, when you can't get your head behind the camera's view finder. Or continuous focussing when you are trying to capture moving subjects. Or mirror lock up when you need to eliminate the vibrations on a tripod.
