All subjective, of course, and I haven't used a 300S but I tried the feel of the 300S when I was looking into getting a (D)SLR, and found it too big and heavy for my liking... whereas the D7000 felt almost as good as the D90 (which semed ideal weight & size for me when I first saw it).
I'd have thought it well worth comparing pros and cons of the 300s and 7000.
Re Image quality, the resolution and low light performance of the D7000 have had a lot of positive reviews and feedback.
