Better/Sharper Corners on Nex-C3? (and 5N?)
#1
There is growing evidence that the same lenses have better corners on C3 (and probably 5N) than previous Nex models.

There have been some counter-examples already so I'm not sure what to think about all this.

The local NEX-5 tests are history now that the NEX-7 will be available soon. I will, of course, retest all the E-mount lenses so we may get a better idea about this then - assuming that the issue has been fixed in the NEX-7 as well.

Look at the lower right corner. 5n has incamera CA correction, but that itself can't account for this much difference, can it?

ok counter example here

looks like the kit lens that came with 5N was just better.

And you do not notice the %n image having way less barrel distortion? It is a heavily corrected image, says very little or nothing about the sensor itself.

that's another plus for 5N: in-camera lens correction.

Only if it's optional. And leaves RAWs untouched. Otherwise it's a minus, at least to me.

I find that with the Zeiss ZM 35mm f/2.8 C-Biogon on a NEX C3:

- there is no colour shift, not in the corners and not at full aperture,

- the centre is very sharp at full aperture already (just like on film),

- the extreme corners are smeared, even at f/5.6 and f/8 (very much unlike on film).

The corner smearing is just a minor issue to me; the extreme corners hardly ever matter.

Very happy with this combo.

I also tried the Contax for G 28mm f/2.8 Biogon on the NEX C3. Same story as with the 35mm C-Biogon above: sharp centre, no colour shift, but blurry corners (worse than with the 35mm).

The Contax G 35mm, 45mm and 90mm are all fine (if not brilliant), corner to corner, on the C3.

Sony will have a hard time producing non-retro focus wide angles for the NEX's. Unfortunately, retro focus + bright means large lens.
