My thought is also the D300 should be more than capable enough for decent shots. So either there was something wrong with the kit, or otherwise operator error.

Even with the Japan situation, pricing seems flat for now, and there remains a big gap in price between them. Given news reports, don't expect "business as normal" in Japan for a long time. Certainly not as short as a few months.
