Lenses not yet tested by Photozone?
#1
First off, I apologize if this may come across as an attempt to hasten the testing process (well... now it certainly will). But I wanted to compile - with everyone's input welcome, of course - the list of lenses that may pose interest to the community, with the other forumites chiming in with their choices, and the PZ's Klaus and Markus (probably) offering their take on the likelihood of these lenses getting through the lab. As these lenses will be reviewed, I may strikethrough their names in this thread to denote the accomplishment - but I'm rather more interested in the Zoners' take really.

I promise that I won't post any really left field stuff - though someone else may. Smile I'm not posting the very new stuff (from the Photokina '16 basket) either - I'm sure its time will come anyway.

Canon:

- 100mm f/2 (full-frame)

- 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 (full-frame)

- 70-200/4 L (full-frame)

- TS-E 45mm f/2.8

- TS-E 90mm f/2.8

- MP-E 65mm f/2.8 (all right... it was a lame joke on my part)

(hmm... looks like the native Canon stuff is really well covered by now)

Sigma:

- 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye

- 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 (non-II)

- 24-35mm f/2 "A"

- 30mm f/1.4 "A" (the SLR one)

- 30mm f/1.4 "C" DN (the mirrorless one)

- 50mm f/2.8 Macro

- 50-100mm f/1.8 "A"

- 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3

- 180mm f/3.5 Macro

- 180mm f/2.8 OS Macro

- 150-600mm f/5-6.3 "C"

Tamron:

- 16-300mm f/3.5-6.3

- 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3

- 70-200mm f/2.8 VC

- 35mm f/1.8 VC (in Nikon mount, to establish the result on a 24MP sensor against the earlier 50MP test in the Canon mount)

- 45mm f/1.8 VC

- 85mm f/1.8 VC

- 90mm f/2.8 Macro (new generation)

- 180mm f/3.5 Macro (full frame)

Tokina:

- 11-20mm f/2.8

- 12-28mm f/4

- 14-20mm f/2

- 24-70mm f/2.8

- 70-200mm f/4

- 100mm f/2.8 Macro (full frame)

Now, I'm not a Nikon user but I took the liberty to add a few untested lenses from that brand that I know of:

- 16mm f/2.8 fisheye

- 16-80mm f/2.8-4

- 24mm f/1.8

- 24-70mm f/2.8 VR

- 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 G VR

- 105mm f/2 DC

- 135mm f/2 DC

- 200-500mm f/5.6 VR

And a few Sony lenses off the top of my head. I surmise that the A mount lenses are not going to be tested anymore, but there's a few that haven't been touched:

- 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6

- 35mm f/1.4 G (just for kicks - we all know it's lame)

- 50mm f/1.4

- 50mm f/1.4 ZA

- 50mm f/2.8 Macro

- 100mm f/2.8 Macro

Now that I mentioned Sony, a few E-mount ones have not yet been rolled:

- 20mm f/2.8

- 24mm f/1.8

- 24-70mm f/2.8 GM

- 24-240mm f/3.5-6.3

- 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6

- 28mm f/2

- 70-200mm f/2.8 GM

- 85mm f/1.4

And the third party ones for that mount:

- Zeiss Batis 18mm f/2.8

- Zeiss Batis 25mm f/2

- Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8

- Samyang 14mm f/2.8

- Samyang 50mm f/1.4

I'm not posting any supertele requests because it's really pretty useless to test the Canon big whites (or their equivalents from Nikon or Sony): at that price point, there's little doubt that they're going to be stellar from center to corner at any aperture; pretty boring from the "inquiring minds..." point of view. Smile AFAIR Markus dabbled in that once - testing the Nikon 200mm f/2 lens - and it was just that: perfect from the get go, all around.

I don't know, Rover, one day per lens would mean busy for like nearly 60 days, or 12 weeks doing nothing than testing lenses.

I would not do that.

You?

And so many oldtimers, at least in the Sigma department... fisheye?  really? That's so nineties...

I'm considering Sony A mount to be dead. At least it's so sick that we won't invest there into a new camera.

We had massive issues with Tokinas so they are, unfortunately, unlikely (although the 24-70/2.8 seems great).

Sony E-mount is a top priority. I'm simply waiting to have lenses available at my favorite rental shop. Will purchase the Batis lenses - at least the 18mm and 85mm - for testing.

Canon - the 24-105L II and 16-35mm III will be covered ASAP. And two EF-Ms.

Tamron - the 15-30mm is coming (Nikon). Eventually I'll have to bow to the inevitable and test those extreme zooms there (sigh).

Sigma - the photokina stuff (12-24/4 and 85/1.4) has priority. Markus is on the 24-35mm.

Nikon - some stuff is coming.

Fuji - yeah, those two remaining lenses.

Olympus - the 12-100mm is hot ...

Pentax - actually one test is in the making there ;-)

We'll not be able to cover the whole market. Legacy lenses are out of question.

That's why Canon has released a new fisheye (zoom, no less) and the third party market for those has blossomed (now that you've said it... there's a bunch of current Sigma and Samyang fisheyes for various mounts and formats. I named the 15mm because lately I've been thinking of getting a fisheye of some variety. Well, if it's "so 90s", at least I hope they don't bring the nu metal thing along...

BTW the 15mm f/2.8 seems to be in production?...

Aha, that was about the reaction I wanted to get. Sure, I don't need nor have any real urge to see all those; I was just contemplating (since I'm not really versed in Pentax, µ4/3 and Fuji - I thought the Fuji system was really all covered anyway? - I wasn't venturing into these areas). My personal interest is mostly in the Sigma and Tamron lenses I mentioned, especially the 45 & 85 mm from Mr. T. Smile

If I had been in Australia, I would've sent you a couple of old "gems" in Canon mount to test. Smile

Fisheyes are also requested for underwater photography (hence fish- and not goat-eye....). But seriously, what do you want to see tested? Distortion 20 or 30%?

And the "bunch" of Sigmas are 2 for APS-C and 2 for FF. 4 flowers I hardly call a bunch, mores a kind of Ikebana  Tongue .

I just thought, it's such a highly specialised thing that you might look elsewhere for user reports, and then try to get a properly centerred version. Good luck!  Smile

I would be interested in the new voigtlander releases for e mount.(10, 12 &15mm). Also the Samyang 12mm 2.0 ncs seems a popular choice in fuji/emount circles.

More manual lenses in Sony FE mount:
  • Zeiss Loxia 21/2.8
  • Zeiss Loxia 35/2
  • Zeiss Loxia 50/2
  • Zeiss Loxia 85/2.4 (available soon)

I have the 21 & 50. The 50 is very good. The 21 is just fantastic.

there are plenty of old lenses still widely available on the used market not tested like Canon 24-85 or Canon 28-80 that have excellent reputation

The LA-EA3 adapter mounted on the A7RII would be a cheaper way to test the A-mount lenses if some are eventually released.

But I agree that the A-mount is mostly dead. I have a very hard time selling the lenses now, even at much lower prices than before.
