The big question is ... is it any better ?

Given Canon's recent form in new lenses, I don't think we need to be worried about general optical performance. While I never had significant problem with the current 100-400L, there seems to be room for improvement. I'd be more interested in AF performance (speed), plus bringing the IS up to modern standards is a nice bonus. If it has weather resistance comparable to the 7D mk2, I might never take them apart...

I agree with you, popo. Since the EF 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 L IS USM (or even since the 70-200mm f4 L IS USM) the Canon lenses have been impressive (16-35mm f4, 200-400mm f4, 24-70mm f4, 70-200mm f2.8 L IS USM II, 24-70mm f2.8, 28mm f2.8 IS USM, 24mm f2.8 IS USM, 35mm f2 USM, 40mm 2.8 STM, new super teles). So I don't think we need to be worried either.
