Rented this lens for a week and wonder if you have any recommendations, tip and or techniques to use this lens with D3s for birds in flight.

Is this the first time you are at 400mm?

Yes

Make sure you have a sturdy tripod, and practice before hand-take pictures and review them on your computer. It takes some time before you start getting good amount of keepers.
