The 50-230mm doesn't seem to be all that bad according to Fuji MTFs at least:

Ok, that is one hell of a nice translation job (and weird too):
"The 16M large APS-C CMOS sensor and EXR PROCESSOR II for rich tonal expression, created a beautiful "bokeh" effect,.. "
Weird for mentioning bokeh effect with a sensor...
"The FUJIFILM X-A1 has the compact, lightweight and high quality."
The rest seems to be written by a more capable PR person
Nice looking camera, but not sure about taking away the OVF/EVF... Taking photos only at arm length does have its drawbacks.

I'm not convinced why I would want this lower end body over, say, NEX or MFT? Still looking forward to seeing what a future X-Pro2 would be like.

I havn't seen a FUJI confirmation, but everyone says it is a Bayer sensor in the X-A1. Might provide interesting insights into the merits (or non-merits) of X-Trans technology. Though I am still wondering where the savings come from, which make the X-A1 cheaper. It didn't say that there is an inferior processor inside nor did I see anything that it is cheapened down in any other way.
The only hardware difference seems to be the filter array and the AA vs non-AA. Why that is worth the price difference I am a bit at a loss.

I got an X-20 recently for when my Pen is to much (downsizing from 4-3rd to 2-3rd

As far as I can tell, the Fuji JPEG engine is quite something. Though in my situation (I am invested in mFT) I would still go for an E-PL5 instead of this one.

Well for NEX (at least today this might change) if you want auto focus lenses with decent quality FUJI seems to be the path.

Compared to Micro-43 well that's a good question and I think it becomes a personal choice based on specific lenses; look; price point and so forth. I think the micro-43 has better (faster) auto focus and more options; the fuji probably (though notsure about the a-1) performs a bit better with higher iso. Fuji has a decent set of lenses and road map.

Can't really say which one you would prefer but at least today NEX is best with manual focus lenses. Maybe those zeiss lenses comming out next year will be a bit better than the current offering.

I believe they mean as opposed to the tiny sensors of point & shoots where the DOF is so huge nothing looks out of focus.

Is it confirmed that the A1 has an AA filter ?

At that rate, the next thing we'll see from Fuji is a superzoom lens.
