The SLR body is the current consumer equivalent of the 18-250/300 super-zoom. When they really want "a camera that takes great pictures and can really zoom in" then they they "know" that they they need an SLR body to go with the super zoom. SLR alternatives (i.e. mirrorless, etc.) are as bizzaro to consumers as fixed focal primes are.
