If you're using Windows and you've installed a Canon driver, VueScan's built-in drivers won't conflict with this. If you haven't installed a Windows driver for this scanner, VueScan will automatically install a driver.
Quote:toni-a, I had a similar problem in the past, as I own a very old flat scanner - which still perfectly work, given that I only use it for scanning financial documents, so no need for ultra quality - that, at a certain operating system upgrade, was no more detected by the system, clearly because it support by Apple had been dropped. I hate being forced to drop a working piece of hardware just because of missing software.
I found that VueScan was able to deal with it, without the need of drivers (because I'm on MacOS; for Windows, VueScan provides its own drivers). Since you can try it freely, I think it's worth while. There's a version for Windows too.
Your scanner seems to be supported:

I was able to locate the driver for your your scanner on the Canon website within minutes.
The latest driver is the one for Win-XP 32bit ... which is hopefully what you have.
With that driver installed and running you should be able to operate the scanner.
