It is a rather good lens ... ;-) ... with odd distortions though.

Well it seems it has good flare resistance.

I was wondering if it doesn't outperform the already excellent 16-35f2.8 zoom lenses by canon Nikon and Sony what's the point of such a lens?

Well, other than flare it is more compact and more light-weight (and it has the worst lens cap on the planet).

The point being that it's meant to be used on Sony cameras, not Canon or Nikon? (FWIW Nikon doesn't make a 16-35 2.8 lens, and the Canon ones have their own known issues).

 If it's the same lens cap as the 25mm, I absolutely agree.
