Dear Experts,



looking at the test results of the most recent EF standard zoom(s) I'm asking myself, why not stay with an old/used EF 28-70mm f/2.8 USM L? I'm considering it as I want to get a good standard zoom for my EOS full format. (currently still working with 28-135 IS). Recently I met an EOS 5dIII woman who was very happy with this combo.



I assume this has been a thread already. However, what is another view to this?

The newer is a bit sharper, but the old is still good as it always was. Also it has a metal filter mount, which is more solid. Another thing the way it works with the front element sticking out when it's in the wide end, and going back into the lens hood for tele, is genius for getting the most out of the lens hood at every focal length. The new doesn't do this, it has the lens hood mounted on the front of the lens, so it moves in and out with the front element, so it doesn't give as good shading as the old one (but the new might be less prone to problems with stray light hitting it).

The only real drawback with the old 28-70 is, that Canon no longer

has all spareparts. So, in case of problems, there is a good chance

the lens becomes a complete loss, because it is simply not possible

to get it repaired.
