Oh my... this really looks wonderful! I wonder if I had a bad sample. Sharpness of yours looks excellent, even at f/2.8! Besides, image character is just as expected, I like it a lot!

Indeed sharp... And based on samples with various OOF transition zones, I think the bokeh looks quite nice.

Was it still "a joy" to use?

I nearly bought one about 3 years ago; the secondhand sample I tried was sharp, super bokeh
The screwdriver focus seemed outdated, particularly on a tele lens with a long focus travel
What makes it a no-no for me is the purple fringing around highlights and the strong blue CAs at full aperture on high contrast subjects. See samples on www.the-digital-picture.com

Hum. Aren't most 180f2.8 lenses automatic 3 1/2 or higher? The only magic to add would be apo wonder <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
Having said that and now looking at the images; this lens is clearly not APO. The bookeh looks quite pleasing (cept for lack of APO wonder)
At f8.0 the corners are nice but not as nice as the middle; at f2.8 - ack the bookeh has issues (mostly in the corner?; not sure if it is due to subject distance or corner issue) but the resolution looks decent; my guess is a solid 4 '*' but my guesses are always way off so far off that I should stop commenting on previews. Something about bookeh is bothering me. I'm bothered by the f2.8 bookeh.
