Hi,

I need your inputs.

I am looking for the best walk around lens for D5100.

I am having a hard time deciding between basically 2 choices: 16-85 VR + a fast prime or Sigma 17-50 OS.

I take all kind of pictures, mostly people, candid shots.

I will tell you what's my take:

I am inclined towards 16-85 because it covers a most useful range, and though slow, it may not be so slow at the wide end, especially at 16mm, just a half stop slower than sigma. I can buy a 50 1.8 or Tamron 60 F2 for low light and portrait use to counter the F5.6 at the long end. Moreover, the Sigma is not as fast as it looks in terms of DOF, being a crop camera lens, so 50 or 60mm can be of better use there.

Those of you who have shot with a constant 2.8 zoom...am i missing something here?

Just in case, i will be purchasing a FF dslr in next 6 months.

regards,

I have the 16-85 and like it a lot... Haven't used f2.8 zoom so can't comment re that, but do have fast primes for portraits / gigs etc. which I wouldn't be without.

I have used both the 16-85 and the 24-70 f2.8 lenses on a DX camera and the 16-85 is in my opinion the best transstandard lens for a Nikon DX camera. It has a useful range and is very sharp throughout that whole range. Now, if you are sure that you will buy an FF within 6 months and sell your DX, then buy an FF lens, but otherwise, you can not go wrong with the 16-85.
Hi,

I am pretty much decided on 16-85....was trying to check if someone has some experience with Sigma 17-50.

Will also add a prime for evenings.
