Hello <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

I'm considering buying a Canon EOS 550d with the 18-55 mm zoom lens, however, notice that the review here on photozone.de forum clearly is more favorable on the:

Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS

than on the:

Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II

But how do I see on the lens which is which?

I'd appreciate help with this <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

Best regards,

Jesper
Look for the silver focal length ring:

Just to mention - they are the same optically. The mk II has just been even more so simplified on the mechanical side.

i think he meant: 18-55 IS (version 1) and the 18-55 (the very old non-is version) mk2.

If that's the case, just look at that the prints on the barrel to see if it shows IS (image stabilizer)

Lenstip.com tested them and it seemed that 18-55 IS version II is worse..As Klaus said, it has just been even more simplified on the mechanical side, for example, IS system:

Hi All,

And thank you for replying. The versions I was thinking about are the versions that are mentioned in the lens reviews here on photozone.de.

The IS version:

The "II" version:

@Klaus: Thanks for making it clear with the silver ring. That's visible :-)

So - with this in mind - if I buy a current EOS 550d kit it seems I will then get the "II" version lens - is that correct?

Thanks again for replying,

Jesper

Today there are 7 different versions named 18-55 as listed in

http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/camer.../ef-s.html

I do not know which one will end in your kit. It's just my opinion you will not get an USM version.

Some dealers (of the "creative" bunch) will repackage kits: Original lens is removed and sold seperately. Then you will find another type - commonly a lesser valued one - in the package. And some dealers just create a package out of the blue.

Why not ask the dealer?
