I'm somewhat surprised by the performance of this lens (although it isn't perfectly centered)

Positively?

Well, Sigma claimed that the center performance is comparable to the Sports and only the borders/corners are worse.

I can sort of see that in the MTFs. Thus I'm positively surprised.
