I'm a beginner and I was wondering if the Nikon D3000 is a good start. Any other recomendations? Under $700.

D3000 is a sweet little camera, however the old generation CCD sensor is a let down - noise looks ugly already at ISO800. I'd suggest looking into the D3100 instead <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

No, the D3000 was a rather lame DSLR. A warmed up D60 with a few more AF points, basically.
There are better budget DSLRs from Pentax, Canon and Nikon (D3100). And Sony.

Sometimes the D5000 is offered at pretty good prices too. Hard to find a DSLR, which is actually NOT better than the D3000 <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
