Good day all,

A friend of mine is very enthousiastic about alternative lenses for his Nikon camera's, especially the Zeiss series. These lenses are out of my legue to be honest, so he recommended to look at some other brands like Contaxt or Olympus.

Just a while back I posted a question about which standard zoom I should buy for my 5D I. Some of you wrote I should get a decent standard some in the range of 28-xx and maybe buy the Canon 24mm/2.8.

So, now I wondered is it worhwhile to look at the following lenses instead of the above mentioned Canon 24mm/2.8.

for my EOS 5D:

Olympus zuiko om 24mm 1:2.8

Yashica ml 24mm F2.8 f. contax yashica

What do you think? MF is no problem for me.

Best wishes,

Reinier
Well, assuming that Samyang continues the recent success path it would make sense to wait for the 24mm f/1.4. I reckon it will sell for less than 500EUR.

If this is too expensive the Zuiko may be a viable candidate I guess.

Hi Klaus,

It is an option, but I assume it is quite heavy in comparing to the 2.8 lens, which can easily fit in my pocket.

Best wishes,

I never liked the yashica though it has a popular following. I actually liked the old contax c/y lens (the newer models are better than the old german ae - it is one of those lenses that zeiss silently improved over the years) though the corners were not the sharpest. I was never very fond of the zuiko 24f2.8; I thought it was soft but Gary tested my sample and it was as good as the others he tested.

The canon 24f2.8 is suppose to be decent.

To be honest I would find samples of the canon vs zuiko; i would be surprise if the zukio is any better. The f2 might be better but it is hard to find and expensive.

Hmmh, do you really think that the 5D + 24 is a "pocketable" solution ?
If you're after a light 24mm with maxaperture around f/2.8,

eventually the old Adaptall-2 24mm f/2.5 (modell 01B) is

something for you ... http://www.adaptall-2.org/lenses/01B.html

It is not an "SP" lens, nevertheless, buildquality is good and

performance is quite decent. They are available (2nd hand)

on e*ay below 100e .. an adapter costs about 15e, so it might be

worth a try. If it doesn't suit your needs, you can sell it again without

a great loss.

I personally have no longer experience with this lens. I had it

on my camera for an hour, but since I already have a 24L I was

not really interested in this one.

Just a thought ... Rainer
Actually, the EF 24 F/2.8 is not a bad lens at all, just a bit noisy in the AF department.

Kind regards, Wim

Reinier

Your right Klaus, my pockets are that large. I meant of course the lens itself.

The Sigma 24/2.8 is decent and had a very short MFD.

I agree. I had one back in the film days and it was superb. Well, I didn't look at 100% crops then. <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />
