Ok, that's an oversight on my part. I'm not familiar with Pentax's lens designations. In theory it could be ok, especially if they do a matched 1.4x converter. But given the price, plus requiring another body, again it doesn't seem economic over just getting the 70-300L.

Makes sense. On the sealing of the 70-300L Canon is quite vague. On their UK website they engage in some general waffle about their L-lens quality:

"L-series quality

The L-series is Canon's flagship professional lens range, representing the best in precision-designed EF optics. L-series lenses combine superior performance with superlative handling, and are highly resistant to dust and moisture."

To me that doesn't read "persistent rain" I am afraid. You could try seeking clarification from Canon and ask their customer service about it. Alternative you might just add some protective solution (rain coat). A company advertising such solutions is "ewa marine". They are around for as many years I am interested in photography. I never used any of their products so don't know whether they are any good, but thought you might want to do some research in that direction.

I hope you find this more useful than suggesting Olympus or Pentax <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

Best wishes

The degree of sealing on the 70-300L was one of the big questions I had when I started this thread. It can't be any worse than the 100-400L, so if it does better, that'll do.
The 70-300L arrived this morning. I've only had a chance to unpack and inspect it for now. It is a LOT smaller than the 100-400L, which I knew alredy but it seems more so now that it is in front of me.

The weather is rather wet today with lots of rain on and off so far, so for once I'm hoping it keeps raining so I can test this out after work tonight.

Oh I see that Canon 300/2,8 is gone from your list. Did you sell it?
Yup, I traded that towards the 70-300L as I never used the f/2.8 to really keep it around. Not something I carry around "just in case", and planned uses are few and far between. I'll keep waiting for the 200-400 extender instead as I'll use a zoom a lot more.

Back on the 70-300L, while skimming the manual it does use the phrase "drip-proof" in it. No rain at the moment for me to test it out...
