Hi Markus,
This is interesting...
This lens has dropped half a star on optical quality from the D200 review to D7000
Is that because of the impact of sensor pixel density on (relative) resolution?
And the bokeh has deteriorated..?
D200:
"The Nikkor AF 85mm f/1.8 D was a very boring lens during the tests simply because it showed a exceptional performance in all tested categories. Besides the lab results the lens shows a beautiful bokeh (out-of-focus blur)."
D7000:
"So, in summary it performs better than its faster and more expensive cousins? Well, not quite, there is one property where it falls short: bokeh. The quality of the background blur is not bad, but lower than with most ultra fast portrait primes. If you're after buttery smooth bokeh, this is not your primary choice. For anyone else, though, the lens offers tremendous value for a quite affordable price."
Sample variation? Interplay of sensor and lens?
No worries, I bought one on the basis of the D200 review and have no regrets...! <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

...and yes, hope my comments don't sound carping... you're getting through an amazing number of reviews, much appreciated - particularly the D7000s, by me! <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

No ... actually the main difference are several years of reviewing experience between those two reviews and also a more or less standardized bokeh analysis, which didn't exist back then when the lens was initially reviewed on the D200.

Ah, ok, thanks Markus - makes sense.
I guess you're not planning to re-do the 85mm 1.4D review on DX as it's been superceded by the 1.4G?
I wonder how the D200 review of the 1.4D would be revised, if you did?

I do <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> In fact, that's what I did this evening: analysing the Imatest data of that lens. However, it's not high on the priority list, several reviews of dedicated DX lenses will come first.

It's great to see the 85/1.8 tested! Did you see any AF problems in your testing and how is the contrast wide open? The LoCA test shot suggest a massive drop in contrast wide open.

LoCA tests are not a good way at all to determine contrast performance... Don't be alarmed, the 85mm f1.8 Nikkor is contrasty enough wide open.

I haven't really used the lens in the field on the D7000. However, judging from usage on the D3x, there was no AF issue with the tested sample. Contrast drops a bit wide open at normal usage distances, a lot more at close focus (where the bokeh fringing images are taken).
