Looks like the Canon and Nikon are similar here with both 85/1.8 offer exellent IQ and thus great value for money.

Two noticable differences: the Canon has smooth background bokeh and it has fast USM AF action, making it suited for indoors sports photography with AF tracking.
The Nikon is the more handsome lens, though.

Yes, it's interesting that both lenses perform very similar, even though they are based on different optical formulas. The CAnon is a bit more complex than the Nikkor.

Yes, bot the Canon & Nikon are very nice lenses.
The Sony community has been asking for one for a long time because the 85/1.4 is too heavy/expensive for many.

I wonder how this 6 element 6 groups design compares to the old pre-Ai Nikkor-H 85mm f1.8 with 6 element 4 groups design that I have.

At least compare like with like e.g. f/2.8 vs f/2.8. If f/2.8 is all you need then great. Otherwise there's still a hole. But to say more is probably going too off topic.
