Hi everyone,

I have the opportunity to go at the next Monaco Grand prix at the end of this month. I'm of course taking my camera (5DII), but I'm pretty sure to need a good telephoto here. I expect to be seated not that far away from the track, but 135mm f/2 (my current longest lens) is probably not enough.

I don't really know

- the zoom range that will fit this sort of event (IS and a broad range is certainly a must but...)

- where I can rent it (I'm currently in France, but a friend of mine coming from the US can bring one form there too)

What would you guys advise ?

Thanks !

Take what you can find between, 70-300, 70-200, your 135 will do fine, but if you could bring a 300f4, you would be guaranteed to get good shots.

Why do you need IS?

You won't want to shoot at shutter speeds for this event where IS will give to any real advantage. Might possibly even be a disadvantage in certain situations, no?

Yes and no... If you are gonna trace the car, which basically means a shutter speed over 2000, you definitely want to switch off the IS. However, if you want to take a head-and- shoulder of the marshals from where you sit, IS may actually be very helpful.

That said, F1 might be the most demanding sport for camera's AF system. I'm not quite sure if 5D mk II might quite fulfill the task... 7D might actually be better with more sophisticated AF system and a smaller CMOS(consequently larger DOF).It might make sense to rent not only a 300+ tele lens (what about 100-400L?)but also a 7D body.

For lens rental, you might want to check lensrentals.com. Never had business with them but their lens list looks nice... Just suggestion...

Lastly, make sure it is allowed for fans to take "big guns" to the standings... <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />
IS is also quite useful for panning shots.

Thanks all. Actually I was thinking about something with a longer range, but it isn't like to be that useful (at least on this track). Good thing not having a 3kg lens at the end of the arms.

Thought about IS for the panning ability yes.

As for the 7D, well, why not, but it adds even more to the bill... Just have to find someone who can lend me one for free <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

also found rentglass.com & lensprotogo in the US. Well let's try one of these white pipes
I would just bring the 5D and a 100-400L plus a standard zoom.
