In just over 2 weeks time I'm expecting to be in Saarbrücken on business. Depending on how travel works out I'll have an evening, maybe two free there.

Any hints/tips for there? I'll probably only take the E-P1 with 20mm pancake and kit zoom with me and will play tourist.

Maybe a trip (12 km) to Völklingen Ironworks at dawn? Tripod recommended.

Ciao, Walter
Thanks for the suggestion, but I doubt I'll have much more than an evening, and probably not enough time to travel out. Such is the way of work travel... it will be a get in, get out type trip so I was thinking of travelling very light.
Yep! Highly recommended.

Unfortunately you will probably not be able to catch a photo tour.

Depending on the daylight you have (and the distance to the spot) you could also check out the "Saarschleife":

Hmm... at this rate I think I might have to see if I can extend the trip somehow... I have some flexibility here since I don't have any obvious direct travel route from the UK (no direct flight).

Here's a link to some info about the Voelklinger Ironworks (also in English):

Here's one of my favorites taken in the inner portion of the ironworks (on a dedicated photo tour).

well i took a trip to Saarbrücken on google earth and it looks like an interesting place, there are some lovely pictures from there, the country looks pretty and so neat and tidy - coming from a place that is untidy vegetation / human wise it does look nice, and some of the town pictures are pretty too, and i didn't have to learn german to get around, a plus for my old mind -

some day some day a visit over there would be sweet

The trip still isn't 100% right now but I think still more likely than not to happen. I think I'll try to travel ahead to gain extra time on the weekend to explore a little more. Looking some more at the ironworks it certainly looks full of interesting potential there, even if not my normal photo comfort zone (wildlife).

The most likely route I'll take will be to fly in via Frankfurt as there is no direct flight from UK to Saarbrücken. Debating if it is worth spending a little time in Frankfurt itself too, or should I spend more around Saarbrücken?

You could also fly to

- Luxemburg

- Metz

- Frankfurt-Hahn (with RyanAir)

This should be (much) closer than Frankfurt.

Frankfurt is obviously nice with respect to its skyline. On the way to Saarbruecken you would pass Mainz which has an impressive Cathedral. Saarbruecken is actually not a really nice city - the old ironworks are, by far, the highlight there.

If you come in via Frankfurt-Hahn you could visit Trier which is certainly a better bet as town than Saarbruecken. It's actually the oldest town in Germany (founded by the Romans).
