I have to agree that I have the same feeling too for a long time... But OTOH, I wouldn't prefer to be separated in parties like "Nikon Talk" , "Canon Talk" etc... either... The probem is, it's impossible to avoid off-topic statements using "brandism" arguements in such an open forum. But frankly, I don't mind too much...

At least, in the tested scenario.

Which must be a strange scenario, since their findings completely contradict my own experiences.

Anyway: what good is a "superior" AF if it doesn't even cover the areas we're all most interested in (the rule of thirds intersections)?

As I said, it's the complete package, the sum of all features, that made the D300 attractive at that time. Certainly for anyone who had hoped for a "3D" from Canon. Except for sensor size, the D300 came closer to that wish than any Canon camera. If Canon had something similar at that time (or something similar to today's 7D) I would not be shooting Nikon today.

Oh, and just for the record: it's not the grip that lifts a D300's (or D700's) frame rate, it's the larger batteries with higher current that you can use in that grip.

What happen here?

As usual the two canon evangelist GTW and BC hijacked the main subject.

Come on people! Be respectful for the opposite side!

I’ll try to explain my vision. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

Marcus expains why he moved to Nikon camp. -> The reaction was that 40D was even better camera. Sorry but such comparison it looks like “bus vs. car”. They are two completely different cameras. And they target two different groups of people.

Later on Borisbg provoke the tread in the next “indulgency”. Do you really believe in advertisements? If Michael Schumacher won F1 with red Ferrari does it mean that if I buy red Ferrari I’ll be the best driver on the road? Poor Lamborghini and McLaren drivers. I’ll the best!!!

I hope that my message doesn’t bring additional firefighting.

With Kind Regards,

Miro

PS. I’m canon shooter. I’m very happy with my canon 400d and 50d.

By the way, I just thought - I have to disagree with this. A “bus vs. car” comparison would be comparing medium format with 35mm slr or something equally different. No, imho this spat stems from the fact that both line-ups are so identical that you have to try real hard to make your favourite brand stand out. More like "Evo vs Impreza" in this case.

It's just some die-hard fans find it difficult to accept <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

It was a very normal scenario, a car at a quite high speed, same track every time, a couple of runs per camera, all cameras set on focus priority (when available) and continuous shooting, testing each with all AF points active and just the center point, all with 70-200 lenses when available. On an overcast day ensuring the same light conditions.

To me a very not so strange scenario, which beats anecdotal stuff.

It is a myth that the "higher current" is needed for the faster FPS with the grip. It is just regulated in firmware... with grip, 8pfs. Without, 6.

This ie beautifully demonstrated by a bug in the firmware, which allows you to fire the stutter at 8fps at very specific circumstances, without the grip. That 6/8fps setting was just put in place to make people fork out for the grip.

6 fps is plenty fast usually, of course. Just that the D300 does not give a consistent 6fps with focus priority enabled <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />.

If you google it more, you'll see that this "hack" yields a maximum of 7fps and for 9 frames only. For sustained 8fps shooting higher voltage is required, so an EN-EL4a (11v) or 8x AA batteries that is, as opposed to standard EN-EL3e (7.4v). But AA's drain real fast, unfortunately.

Wow! We have come a long way from my initial input. But threads are made to be twisted, I guess <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> In the meantime I went to a Nikon seminar, where it was obvious that the bosses knew something. The 200€ "deal" on a D700 with a 24-120 in France ends on March 15th. Draw your own conclusions! Kindly VL

While every user has different wishes, the mythical "3D" in general could be described as the D700, or D700 successor now time has moved on. Affordable, high speed, big sensor. Then again, it does sound like for every Canon user wanting a D700 equivalent, there are Nikon users wishing for a 5D2 equivalent. Different cameras more suited to different uses.

It's most likely half and half. Nikon would need to specify performance that can be achieved under worst case conditions, including older batteries which are not in perfect condition but not dead yet, and/or on the lower end of its working charge, while driving whatever external kit as may be required like the lens focus motor. So even if the system can manage full speed under good conditions, they may not be able to guarantee it under all conditions and as such it is more cautious to limit it to something safe.

Personally it would be preferable if they specified the original battery to be of adequate power delivery in the first place.

Hello Miro,

I didn't mean to provoke BC, I implied that if there is drastic change of what sport journalist are using there is reason for it, regardless what xyz magazine is saying about focusing. Before the appearance of D3 (it has the same AF module as D300) there were very few to none Nikons on the side line. I didn't expect that BC will start taking inventory of what is available on the sideline.

Haha, you are predictable. The same ONE image that over and over gets used by the likes of you, from 2008 Olympics. just one image that keeps on being repeated over and over. I on the other hand was not selective in the choosing of images that popped up via a simple google search for "|event| photographers".
