Considering the NEX ergonomical failure (at least for their first incarnation and FOR ME, my opinion), Nikon rumors of a x2.7 crop camera, the silence of Canon, my totally partial denial of Samsung products, this sounds quite exciting to me! that is if we think of typical Pentax know-how for small designs :-O

Oh well, I'm just bored I guess.

Although Pentax was once renowned for building very small high quality slrs, I honestly do think they lost it a bit over 15 years ago, when they stopped catering for professionals in the 135 format (35 mm film) market, both with regard to cameras and to optics. I still don't know whart happened, as I had enough very good gear in those days to not really look at any new gear, so I completely missed the turning point. I think it is a great shame, and I also think it is unfortunate that they never managed a turnaround, so far anyway.

I honestly hope that they will manage to do so, but I am worried they won't.

Ah well, we'll just have to wait and see i guess <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />.

Is this official ?

If so it's certainly a good news. Pentax is king in pancake land after all.

It's getting a little crowed though - Sony, Samsung (Ok, can be ignored), Pana, Oly are already there.

I'd guess that the Nikon system will be a failure as well if their sensor is much smaller than MFT though.

This is "official" http://k-rumors.com/k4-finally-hoya-deci...ss-camera/

There was a pdf file with the full statement but it's gone now.

Still likely it will never see the light.

Crowded? i think they will all come to it eventually (not counting ricoh, already half there), with different level of enthusiasm surely.

I think that if they really go ahead with it, it may just create another class of camera. Whether it fails or not, I think will depend on IQ at low isos <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />.

After all, Nikon IS king of noise suppression currently <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />.

I expect most camera makers will offer such a light-weight, display-based camera soon. Live view may be preferable for the average person anyway, and it might make the transition to an SLR easier. Like it or not, the pentaprism is an expensive component to design for.

THK apparently saved Pentax from bankruptcy to gain access to the accessory market in the British isles where Pentax was a strong brand. But looking at this from a business perspective, there are too many makers in the market already, Pentax is among the weakest brands overall, and selling off the Pentax lens designs and other technology may make a lot of sense in 5-8 years.

My expectation is that THK will continue to make point-and-shoots under the Pentax brand, but may wind down the SLR side of the business after a few more go-rounds. The medium format business would probably have been sold off already if there were any buyers. So while there may be a few future SLRs out of Pentax, I don't know that the brand has much of a long-term future in the SLR business.

Amen to that.

Few ideas:

- it's a rumor, nothing official. And I don't expect an EVIL Pentax - not soon, anyway.

- "THK apparently saved Pentax from bankruptcy" - Scott, what are you talking about? An US dealer, saving an entire company from bankruptcy? (if you're talking about the THK I know) And you're talking as if Pentax were in danger of going bankrupt...

Hoya selling the medium format business - nope, it doesn't make any sense. Before the 645D there wasn't much to be sold (and to whom? the financially starved DMF makers?), after - why selling a successful part of your business? Besides, the 645D is closely related to the APS-C cameras (it shares components with the K-7).

Pentax dying - it doesn't make sense, either. They're profitable. They're glowing. They're preparing new, interesting products.

THK is not a "dealer", rather the import organization for T(okina), H(oya) and K(enko), all the brands from the THK/Hoya consortium/company.

It was Hoya (Tokina) who started to develop lenses together with Pentax (12-24mm, 16-50mm, 10-17mm among others), before Hoya bought Pentax too.

Now it should be THKP.

Yeah, whatever. From the THK's site:

Quote:THK Photo Products, Inc. is the U.S. distributor for Tokina Co., Ltd. (Tokyo), one of the top manufacturers of converter lenses for the 35mm single-lens reflex camera, for all products of the camera accessory manufacturer, Kenko Co., Ltd. (Tokyo), camera filters of the worldly prestigious brand of HOYA Corporation (Tokyo). and the most copied line of tripods today.SLIK Corporation (Tokyo).

Don't you know Hoya is a Japanese company? (a lot bigger than THK; even Pentax Corporation was huge, compared with a mere US distributor). Don't you know Hoya is not Tokina? Don't you know that THK does not distribute Pentax products? (Pentax Imaging does, in USA) You're talking as if THK owns everything, which is nonsense.
