Nah, it‘ll be about temples, shrines, gardens and nature (Kyoto, Nara, Koyasan, Kumano Kodo). We‘ll be in Osaka for a day but that‘s about in regarding modern Japan.
Technically this translates to:
- dark places (temples) -> Dual IS will come handy
- neat details (shallow DoF)
- architecture & landscape -> at least 24mm
Not so much:
- long tele (>150mm)
I really enjoyed the aquarium in Osaka. Ride up an escalator to the top (go figure) into a rain forests then spiral down to the bottom of the ocean. One of the best.
You are just trying to talk Klaus into bringing the A7 FF series gear, right?
I can't offer any recommendations equipment wise........
........however Japanese beer is nice......
...have one for me..
...or seven!
So what did you decide to take ?
I'm still not 100% sure. I have till Saturday ;-)
The Oly 12-100mm PRO is super tempting ... but ...
My spouse will take the Sony A7R II with the Zeiss 35mm and Sony 85mm f/1.8

Hmm, either
A) Congratulations on your marriage, since your girl friend mutated to a spouse in the course of this thread.
or
B) Going to Japan with a girl friend and a spouse... Sounds very interesting...

You're quite a lucky man to have a spouse who is into photography :-D

She isn't really that much into it but I have to keep her occupied while shooting myself. ;-)

Why does this sound familiar ?
We're in the same boat
Wait till you'll have a baby and wife asks you to carry diapers in your camera bag "instead of all those lenses"
Well, that use case doesn't apply. ;-)
FWIW, I took the Oly 12-100mm PRO ... and I'm glad I did (instead of carrying more). We just had a couple of days near 30C and around 90% humidity (no rain) ... and I was just melting.
We are in Koyasan now. If you ever visit Japan - don't miss this one!
