I made a small comparo in close up portraits with canon lenses
50f1.4 vs 85f1.8 vs 100mm macro 

same lighting conditions all taken around MFD except pictures with 100mm macro

canon 50mmf1.4 at f2 full frame

1.6 crop helps a little

canon 85f1.8 around MFD at f1.8

now with 1.6 crop

Canon 100mm macro I am not at MFD but you can see the advantage, I think f2.8 is more than enough here

All pictures are camera JPG taken with EOSRP plus adapter, downsized using DXO photolab
