An obvious lens to compare this new Nikkor Z 50mm f1.2 S with is the Canon RF 50mm f1.2 L USM.
The Nikkor is a bit heavier (1090g vs 950g), and is a tad more complex with 2 more elements (17 vs 15). The Nikkor is considerably bigger (150mm vs 108mm).

Very different lens designs, resulting in a longer front heavy Nikkor, with big front elements in comparison. I wonder if the difference in design philosophy results in less vignetting in images with the new Nikkor?

If I read them correctly, the Nikkor is as sharp or even a tad sharper wide open as/than the Canon, so a very good lens (see Klaus' review of the Canon lens), and a bit more contrasty.
MFD also comparable (45cm with 0.15x magnification for the new Nikkor, 40cm with 0.19x magnification for the Canon).

The new Nikkor undercuts Canon's price: MSRP for the US $2100 according to dpreview ($2299 for the Canon).

Maybe. On the other hand, the Z system, like many other mirrorless systems, makes heavy use of software correction, so I'm not sure if "less vignetting" has been high on their priority list.

Personally, I'm a lot more excited about the 14-24 anyway.
The 14-24mm f2.8 looks to be a very nice UWA.

Yes, "small" for what it is and it takes filters which is a must.

It is not really small for what it is. Small compared to DSLR UWAs, that is what it is.

This Nikkor Z 14-24mm f2.8 measures 88.5mm x 124.5mm, according to Nikon.
The Sony 12-24mm f2.8 is only 1 centimeter longer, while being even wider.
The Canon 15-35mm f2.8 is about the same size (88.5mm x 126.8mm).

Small compared to DSLR lenses, but normal for mirrorless.
True. But the natural comparison, for those mainly interested in the Z system, is the F-mount 14-24. Compared to that one, it's considerably smaller. Plus, lighter than any competitor, no matter what mount.

I assume it will distort like crazy, though (which the camera will hide from most users).
Not all Nikkor Z lenses are badly corrected (where the Z240-70mm f4 is not, the 20mm f1.8 is for instance quite well corrected). And this Nikkor has the same amount of elements as the quite well corrected Canon 15-35mm lens. I would not be surprised if this lens is actually quite well corrected..... Time will tell.
Both 24-70 zooms are not outstanding in this regard. But yes, let's wait and see, time will tell.

I saw the announcement early this morning. My first thought was "meh, another round of boring & expensive lenses I have zero interest in"

Several hour later, first signs of doubt appeared (and I'm not a zooms person).

Now, I'm already thinking of what of my belongings can be sold to fund this totally meaningless acquisition.

Although I have very high expectations about 50/1.2S, the Z 2.8S trio looks like out of this world. Each one of these lenses seems to easily beat many prime lenses that were introduced more than five years ago...

The market slowly starts to offer new and exciting stuff again as there was a point in time I thought the camera business is stuck.
