I thought maybe they were going to make it collapsible like the Canon, but no. IDK if it's a good or bad thing though. My bog standard EF 70-200/2.8 IS (first gen) is perfectly fine as it is.

For me it is a good thing. The Canon's FOV widens a lot towards MFD, where all Canon's former 70-200mm lenses showed the FOV to narrow towards MFD.

Huh, never really noticed that.

lenstip just reviewed it, they were fast!
https://www.lenstip.com/617.1-Lens_revie...ction.html
Sony did it again: it looks like they managed to produce the best 70-200 f2.8 lens out there.
In fact, it beats the new Nikon Z 70-200 in all categories, while being smaller, lighter and with fewer lens elements (17 elements/14 groups vs 21 elements/18 groups)!
The "wide mount" talk from Nikon seems a bit difficult to swallow. Even if it allows for better theoretical designs, in practice Sony is manufacturing incredible lenses, often better than the competition, despite their so called limited mount.
Here is the Nikon Z review for comparison: https://www.lenstip.com/616.1-Lens_revie...ction.html

A 70-200mm f2.8 is not a type of lens that will exploit the wider mount. Sony's limited IBIS performance might be related to the narrow mount, though.

Old vs new according to Sony
New:

"the new Sony lens should be called outstanding", but no "Editor's Choice" or however their version of the Zone's HR is called? Come on lenstip
Anyway looks like a great lens, and the price is "remarkable", too... Unfortunately. Interesting that it only has 17 elements while my ages old Canon 70-200/2.8 has 23 I think?

17 is the new 23? The Canon RF 70-200mm f2.8 also has 17 elements.

You can see it in the specs, your 1st gen f2.8 IS reaches 0.17x at 1.4m, the RF reaches 0.23x at 0.7m (half the distance). half the distance should have given 0.17 x 2 = 0.34x magnification, of the lenses behaved the same.

Apart from the sharpness etc. the other huge improvement is focus speed and accuracy ....
Toneh? Northrup compared the Tamron 70-180mm vs the old Sony vs the new version on the A1.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIqa8djHp68&t=602s
The Tamron took 163 shots with 83 in focus.
The old Sony took 277 shots with 127 in focus
The new Sony took 317 shots with 263 shots in focus ....... (all in the same time period)
This lens is clearly designed for the Sony A1 sports camera and super fast sports focusing ....... just the IBIS losing out a little ......
