I'm somewhat surprised that it "looks" rather conventional. Previously, Sigma mentioned that it has to do something special (which is why it took them so long), but based on the announcement, there doesn't seem to be much in it.
Somewhat disappointing based on the paper specs.
The Sony 70-200GM is 300g more lightweight - the Tamron 70-180VC is even more so.
In E-mount, Sigma could only compete with a lower price tag.
However, it's probably the go-to lens in L-mount.
I saw people at DPReview go up in riot about the weight of 1345 grams.
How am I still using my Canon 70-200/2.8 which weighs 1470 grams (plus the adapter now...) is unthinkable.
Btw I wonder how that one would have tested on a high MP body.
This lens is one of professional photographers trinity lenses, professionals care little about minor size and weight difference, this one has updated autofocus and updated image stabilization both of which are crucial for professionals, add decent optics and you have lens selling like hot cakes
I think full-time professionals won't purchase third-party lenses.

Agreed but not all professionals are full timers, all depends on which professionals you are talking about, professionals working for agencies don't purchase lenses anyway, it's the agency.
Other professionals like wedding photographers and freelancers do buy lenses, recently Sigma rose to prominence in this community
When I'm working in photography - which isn't the only thing I'm doing for a living, mind you - I couldn't care less what brand I'm using. I'm happily using anything, and my Tamron 85mm is one of my top 3 favourite lenses. I've seen many others, including those working for the top agencies, use lenses from whatever manufacturer (though Tamron is the preferable one, it seems). Of course the MF lenses are rare, so not much Laowas and the likes.
