A friend of mine has been trying everything almost everything for landscape photography.

He started with 7D plus 15-85 then in quest for a lighter combo moved to EOS M that was quite a disappointment then it was 5Diii with 24-105: Good but Too heavy so he went fuji Fuji and decided he doesn't want mirrorless after trying 2 systems, then it was Nikon APS-C with 16-85: Too slow unresponsive, then 5Diii again.

Now he wants a good zoom lighter than 24-105.

My obvious suggestion was 24-85 but it hard to find, he is considering 28-105 any better suggestions especially with current lenses?
That was quite a gear rollercoaster ride Wink

So, if he's mainly into landscape photography, he doesn't need a fast lens (in terms of aperture) nor a fast camera (in terms of usability). It would seem a mirrorless camera giving a good live view implementation would be the natural choice. Combined with any decent zoom, which is going to be stopped down anyway. APSC sized sensor should not be an issue for the intended usage.

I can't help but wonder if his issues are really with the gear or his expectations. Just assuming, though, no offense intended.

It would be helpful to know and understand in a little more detail the kind of issues he had.

24-70 F/4L IS or 16-35 F/4 L IS?

Personally I prefer primes over zooms for landscape photography, but to get the best IQ you end up with L-glass.

The two zooms mentioned are excellent, regardless, better than the 24-105L.

BTW, out of interest, what is his reasoning that mirrorless is not for him?

HTH, kind regards, Wim
24-85 is alright - I'm using it a lot, though not on FF. The negatives are the flimsy plastic build, lack of IS (it's a lens from 1996 after all) and lessening IQ towards the long end (the CA are pretty noticeable at 85mm even stopped down, FYI).

24-70/4 IS is the more realistic option, but it's still in another class with regards to size and weight. Frankly, if someone considers the 24-105L large, it cannot be helped in a reasonable way. The difference between the 24-70/4 and the 24-105L (first version) is only 70 grams. The 24-105 STM would help shave another 75 grams but it STILL has the same 77mm filter thread so the size advantage is slim at best...

The 24-85 is noticeably smaller than each of those with 67mm filter threads and 380mm weight but then the buyer should ask whether these savings are worth it if he's still using a relatively large FF camera. To me, it sounds a bit of an overkill, trying to save on matches as the saying goes.

The 28-105 doesn't seem to be a particularly good lens. I've had no firsthand experience with it but just look at the TDP comparison...

There are two main 28-105mm versions. The f3.5-4.5 version(s) are the ones to consider, the slower one is a very shitty lens. Don't expect very sharp results with the better version, but it renders quite nicely and has quite good colour/contrast.

But your friend is all over the place with just buying stuff. A 5D mk III with lenses will always be on the heavy side. Maybe just look at a 80D + 18-135mm IS STM/nano USM combination.

I can't imagine how a recent Nikon APS-C camera with 16-85 DX would be too "unresponsive" for landscape photography. Seriously. I shot a D90 for a while and it was great, except that the sensor was getting old (dynamic range, pixel count, high ISO for night sky). That aside, why bother with a 24-105 for landscapes? 16-35 something is a much more useful range for this. If he needs longer, add a normal prime or a short telephoto.

That said, if I were to start out now, I'd go for a Sony A7r II + Sony 12-24/4.

He was complaining in fact of slow menu, each time he needed something there was an hourglass appearing...he had also canon16-35f4IS he sold and got voigtlander 20mmf3.5 instead.

his gear now is canon 5Diii, voigtlander 20mmf3.5, canon 24-105L he is selling, Canon 28-105m canon 35mmf2.0, canon 50mmf1.4 (he bought in august, barely used, I am buying to replace my aging 50f1.4)

Ok. Sounds strange. Never had that happen to me. Maybe a memory card issue or what do I know.
