If we put the new 22mp sensor aside, the improvements on AF and metering side look promising (at least on paper)...

And regarding the 22mp sensor, I believe if the D800 and 5D3 would exchange the sensors, users from both sides would be quite happy with it <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='🙂' />...

To be honest, I'm slightly surprised they did not increase the resolution and thus compete directly with Nikon in this segment, too. However, from Canon's perspective the new 5D Mark III makes perfect sense. It will cost a few 1Dx purchases, but they no doubt offer the more attractive camera for the targeted audience (compared to the D800).

The interesting thing now is that both have open holes in their full-frame line-up again: Nikon has no direct successor to the D700, while Canon will need something to make the high-rez and 1Ds users happy (maybe with the long-rumored move to MF?).

Wow, 950g for the body only ... they must be crazy.

Only 140g more than the old one? I wouldn't notice it. By the time you stuck a lens on the proportionate difference in holding weight isn't much.

e.g. with a 100-400L at 1380g, the weight increase over using with a 5D2 is only 6%. And before someone else goes there, at the other extreme, take a 50mm f/1.4 at 290g, that's nearer 13%.

Still haven't digested all the details yet. While everything is a nice to have, there isn't a single "must have" feature in there that would make me pick it over the half the price 5D2 or even better, a 7D. Can someone get me a D800 with EF mount?

Well, here in the local forums Canon users look quite frustrated because of the 1mp increase in resolution... I guess this is mostly because of the relatively higher price compared to D800... Most of them had migrated from D700 to 5D2 at that time and now they tend to get the new D800... I really don't understand this...

The interesting thing now is that both have open holes in their full-frame line-up again: Nikon has no direct successor to the D700, while Canon will need something to make the high-rez and 1Ds users happy (maybe with the long-rumored move to MF?).

Mr. Thom Hogan shared quite an interesting alternative with regard to that on the Nikon side (one of them was a D400 with 16mp FX sensor)... I'd say maybe a D700x with that 16mp sensor... It would be fine with me (given that the AF, metering and other features stay the same and of course with a lower price)...

OTOH, I believe Canon will have something with a high-resolution sensor in the near future... The road to the target has twists and turns, but I think Canon will not stay back on the MP race...

I doubt the D400 will be FX. They need a high end but still affordable DX camera, and IMHO the D7000 doesn't qualify here.

The D4 sensor in a D700 body would be great, but they won't make the same mistake again and offer it too soon along the new D4.

Personally I consider the other announcement today, Canon's move to radio controlled wireless flash, almost more exciting. That was long overdue. I'm a little worried about the limited range, though (only up to 30 meters). For someone who's used to PocketWizards that sounds almost ridiculous.

Sure, but the MF route has always been expensive, still those who really needed ultra high resolution have spent lots of money on Haselblad or PhaseOne backs. Or the 645D, which is dirt cheap in MF terms, but still mighty expensive from a DSLR user's perspective.

The market currently is small, but if they manage to deliver PhaseOne quality on a Pentax price level, the segment could grow considerably among professionals. They obviously see such an opportunity in the cinema/movie market, too.

MF is not going to happen. And the Canon execs have been saying (in interviews after the launch of the 1D-X) that they can not say anything about products in development, but if the market asks for higher MP models, they can and will deliver that. So who knows what is in the pipeline, considering the competition (D800) too, with 27% more pixel resolution.

The image quality seems to be impressive, it has that dynamic feel I like about the 1D mk III files (materials look more real, colours appear more "deep" in the "normal" ISO settings sample files). Not sure yet about the higher ISO performance, as that ISO 6400 image has been ruined by some standard NR (Canon always does standard RAW conversions for their samples).

Only thing I am missing in this new 5D is no swivel LCD.

I agree with Klaus that it is a bit unfortunate that it is heavier at 950 grams, but I guess that is a price to pay for a more rugged build (Nikon D800 is even heavier). Although Pentax with its K5 shows it is possible to make a more compact, lighter camera.

That's hardly a valid comparison. Both Canon and Nikon also have lighter and more compact cameras, but not with full-frame sensors.

Personally I consider the other announcement today, Canon's move to radio controlled wireless flash, almost more exciting. That was long overdue.

I've been reading about the ST-E3 and 600EX a little. Canon can now control each group individually, set power and flash mode seperately for each group. That finally puts their wireless flash system on the same level Nikon has had for years.

Even better: they can control up to 5 groups (2 more than before and also 2 more than Nikon CLS), but only up to 15 devices (why? no such limit with IR controlled flashes).

Good:

works as remote trigger for cameras, too
flexibility
sealed components (flash and trigger)
600EX flash can do both (optical and radio wireless). However, I'm not sure you can mix both in one setup (trigger some older EX flashes optically and 600EX flashes by radio).
ST-E3 now uses the much cheaper AA batteries

Not good:

very limited range
ST-E3 is radio only, no optical wireless. So, for now only works with the 600EX, not older flashes
especially ST-E3 seems a bit expensive

It is a very valid comparison, actually. The Pentax K5 is a metal alloy body, weather sealed without vertical battery grip. It is quite a bit smaller and less heavy than the comparable Canon 7D and Nikon D300s.

No reason to assume the same difference can not be achieved with a full frame sensor?

I guess since I'm biased towards bigger/heavier lenses, the body size and weight has never been a major issue for me. I really hate grips too as wasted bulk that gets in the way, so I'd never get a 1 series other than my dirt cheap 1D used as a door stop... at the other end, my most extreme moment was shooting with a 450D and 300mm f/2.8 in one hand. There, the body was irrelevant.

For most, I think cost is a far bigger factor constricting full frame DSLR adoption than size is. Reduction in body size would risk complaints on handling, unless they can push the price way down and move it towards the mainstream where that is less important.

Precisely. But Pentax is busy with other things, Canon only seems interested in decreasing the weight of their exotic lenses (and increasing the prices), and Nikon's focus is on MP and video, not improving their bodies.

I guess they had to put it in the 5D line, because it s scheaper than the 1Ds line was. Really feels like a 1Ds and 5D consolidation to me, based on Canon's experience with both of late.

As a cannon shhoter you know that canon is busy with shifting of product lines.

Introduction of xxxx series - Canon 1100 is underpowerd canon 300d
Canon xxx series went up look at canon300D _>canon 600d
canon xx serieas went down 50d->60d
New series is introduced - Canon 7d - super canon xx
1d and APS-H series seems to be death. However not officially said from canon.
5d goed up with MKIII and soaring the current 1DSs
future 1ds ??????

The question is how the new 1ds will look like

Whatever it will be, the message from canon is "no Full Frame camera for the mass"

It is a shame that initial idea of Canon 5dMK1 is deth.
