That's hardly a valid comparison. Both Canon and Nikon also have lighter and more compact cameras, but not with full-frame sensors.

Personally I consider the other announcement today, Canon's move to radio controlled wireless flash, almost more exciting. That was long overdue.

I've been reading about the ST-E3 and 600EX a little. Canon can now control each group individually, set power and flash mode seperately for each group. That finally puts their wireless flash system on the same level Nikon has had for years.

Even better: they can control up to 5 groups (2 more than before and also 2 more than Nikon CLS), but only up to 15 devices (why? no such limit with IR controlled flashes).

Good:

works as remote trigger for cameras, too
flexibility
sealed components (flash and trigger)
600EX flash can do both (optical and radio wireless). However, I'm not sure you can mix both in one setup (trigger some older EX flashes optically and 600EX flashes by radio).
ST-E3 now uses the much cheaper AA batteries

Not good:

very limited range
ST-E3 is radio only, no optical wireless. So, for now only works with the 600EX, not older flashes
especially ST-E3 seems a bit expensive

To be honest, I'm slightly surprised they did not increase the resolution and thus compete directly with Nikon in this segment, too. However, from Canon's perspective the new 5D Mark III makes perfect sense. It will cost a few 1Dx purchases, but they no doubt offer the more attractive camera for the targeted audience (compared to the D800).

The interesting thing now is that both have open holes in their full-frame line-up again: Nikon has no direct successor to the D700, while Canon will need something to make the high-rez and 1Ds users happy (maybe with the long-rumored move to MF?).

Only 140g more than the old one? I wouldn't notice it. By the time you stuck a lens on the proportionate difference in holding weight isn't much.

e.g. with a 100-400L at 1380g, the weight increase over using with a 5D2 is only 6%. And before someone else goes there, at the other extreme, take a 50mm f/1.4 at 290g, that's nearer 13%.

It remains a move against the trend though. The mk III is neither small nor more light weight than the 5D II and the latter is already a brick. I expected something like the 60-600D with a full format sensor.

It is a very valid comparison, actually. The Pentax K5 is a metal alloy body, weather sealed without vertical battery grip. It is quite a bit smaller and less heavy than the comparable Canon 7D and Nikon D300s.

No reason to assume the same difference can not be achieved with a full frame sensor?

I guess since I'm biased towards bigger/heavier lenses, the body size and weight has never been a major issue for me. I really hate grips too as wasted bulk that gets in the way, so I'd never get a 1 series other than my dirt cheap 1D used as a door stop... at the other end, my most extreme moment was shooting with a 450D and 300mm f/2.8 in one hand. There, the body was irrelevant.

For most, I think cost is a far bigger factor constricting full frame DSLR adoption than size is. Reduction in body size would risk complaints on handling, unless they can push the price way down and move it towards the mainstream where that is less important.

Precisely. But Pentax is busy with other things, Canon only seems interested in decreasing the weight of their exotic lenses (and increasing the prices), and Nikon's focus is on MP and video, not improving their bodies.

I guess they had to put it in the 5D line, because it s scheaper than the 1Ds line was. Really feels like a 1Ds and 5D consolidation to me, based on Canon's experience with both of late.

I wonder what is in store next, aka a high MP body... I think the door is open, for a 3D <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='😃' />.

Huh what? The EOS 1100D is better in every way than the 300D which was functionally stripped down big time. The 1100D is a fully featured compact DSLR and blows the 450D and 350D out of the water. The 1000D was introduced to compete with cheaper competition, and is not really very different in line from the XXXD series at all.

I can't make much sense of your lines at times. The EOS "rebel" line progressed naturally from the 350D upto the current 600D, no shifting any product lines here.

The 60D went up in just about every way (IQ, resolution, live view, movie, AF). Only the drop of the micro adjust AF feature could be seen as "down". One single feature. Wow.

The 7D was clearly positioned to compete with the D300 (s) from Nikon. Yes, kind of a new line.

How official do you want to have it? Canon has clearly stated the 1D-X is replacing the 1D mk IV, and merging with the 1Ds full frame series.

Can not make sense of this line again. The 5D mk III is clearly a follow up of the 5D mk II, gaining a new AF system and improving in other areas as expected.

Canon has clearly stated the 1D sports/PJ cameras and the 1Ds studio cameras with pro grade weather sealed bodies merged into the 1D-X which gives both FF and fast FPS. Canon also has stated that if the market asks for it they can and will deliver a higher resolution camera. Which will not be an 1Ds.

Why isn't the 1D X the new 1Ds? To me a 5D is still a 5D and not a 1D, however much they have improved the little things.

Also I think the 5D3 is the "3D". People wanted a fast full frame, low(ish) MP, good AF. Basically the D700 in Canon form. That is where the 5D3 slots in right now.

I honestly think the 1Dx is not the replacement of the 1Ds, even if it is FF. It is a 1D to me, with larger pixels to improve high iso noise well over that of the 1D IV (which, BTW, was the best sensor out there regarding its native S/N ratio up to that point, prior to RAW tweaking <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='😃' /> <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='😉' />). A lot of 1Ds shooters don't need the weight or size of the 1Ds, would like some reasonably good weatherproofing, and apparently don't need more than about 21 MP. Then there are quite a few videographers which would like a better featured 5D II, from a video POV. I do think these categories fo photographers is what the 5D III caters for. High iso is very good with this camera (see DPReview's high iso shots which they just added to their preview - http://www.dpreview....neos5dmarkiii/9), which may still make me sway towards it (provided it has interchangeable focusing screens), but for me this is not a newer 5D, but somethign between a 5D II and 1Ds IV. I think it is priced according to the number of cameras Canon thinks to sell and to whom; more expensive than the 5D II, but much less than the 1Ds III, which didn't really sell too well after the release of the 5D II.

The new camera may be called a 5D, but AFAIAC that's only because it is similar in size and controls. They had to call it something. And the 5D II is and was a great success, so why not build on that tradition. BTW, the 5D II is not goinf to be discontinued, not yet anyway.

I do hope Canon will introduce a high MP FF sensor based body as well - that's really what I am looking for, whatever they'd call it. I'd settle for a 45-46 MP camera for now <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='😃' />.

On the D700 comparison, of course nothing stays still and you have to say for today, the MP count is comparatively low, with a medium-high frame rate. It isn't the slow(er) and high MP model on the market now.

I do agree the bodies are named more for their body style. If you say 1D (regardless of the specific model) you know what that will be like physically. So to me, if you say 5D, I will think of a certain form factor, give or take evolutionary changes.

As for pricing of the 5D3, I think it is in line with expectations if you consider the significant changes in exchange rates since the 5D2 came out. But that does in part depend on where in the world you are. Actually I wonder how the yen price of the mk2 compares with the mk3?

Hmmm, seems that many Canon users are very unhappy with the 5DMk3 (see http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1032&message=40850823)

Obviously the same (but tweaked) sensor as used in the 5DMk2. Horizontal banding is optimized but vertical banding is still there.

Same (low) dynamic range as the 5DMk2 and 2 stops lower than the D800.

And still $500 more than the D800. Very disappointing from Canon. I thought they could do better...
