There have been rumors of a new ASPH 50mm Summicron floating around for quite a while, so it's no surprise to see the lens finally introduced today. I was very delighted to read it's even an APO lens. How cool is that?

Well, my delight immediately stopped when I saw the rumored price:

Even for a Leica lens, that's way over the top. I mean... it's just a fifty, after all...

I really like the idea of a monochrome only camera, though. Will be interesting to see some results.

The pricing is indeed ridiculous. That they charge in addition for a lens cap and a rear lens cap is the icing on the cake.

The link is dead now, for those who missed it: the lens is said to cost USD 7195.

I'm sure the caps are included with the lens (I haven't seen any lens without them), the prices mentioned only as spare parts. Except for the metal cap, that could have been an optional accessory. Or maybe it's the hood? That would be disappointing, since the current non-ASPH Summicron has a built in hood.

We'll sure see the official announcement soon.

The price in Europe seems to be EUR 6000, at least that's what Meister Camera (a reputable Leice dealer) lists the lens at.

That's more than twice the price of the Summilux 50/1.4, which interestingly is also an APO lens (even if for whatever reason it doesn't carry those three letters in its name).

Sorry, I don't get it.

I just got myself a new 50/2.0 with M-mount yesterday, at roughly 1/100th of the price of the new Summicron: a Jupiter 8. Sure, that's not an APO. And in direct comparison, it will likely offer worse bokeh and of course a little less resolution. But hey... I saved more than 5900 EUR <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />
