Might be interesting. I never had the real need for a lens in this range until recently - hence I'm getting by with a Canon EF 24-85 unit - but this looks interesting, especially the VC. Guess it'll cost around $1000 (OK, $999) but that'd still be a lot less than the L, which isn't even stabilized and probably isn't going to be.

Yep, smart move by Tamron. It will most likely be expensive (especially for a Tamron lens), but if they got everything right they have a killer lens in their line-up now. ' />The only thing I'm slightly worried about is the bokeh quality. Both the Canon L and the Nikkor deliver in this regard (IOW: they do very well for a zoom lens) but the Sigma 24-70 shows that good bokeh is not necessarily a given with a pro grade zoom lens.
Talking about Canon and Nikon: I wonder how long it will take them to react. And IMO they have to react now.

This is an important lens for me. It'll push me into FF for sure.
Rumors have it that Canon tried implementing IS into their 24-70 f/2.8 lens but found it too heavy. As for Nikon, they never bothered putting VR into their DX 17-55 f/2.8 lens, so I doubt they'll care about introducing VR into the FX 24-70 f/2.8 lens.

This is one of the bread-and-butter lens types which helps define the respective systems

Judging from the latest rumors, the 24-70L II will not have IS. This would leave an open door for Nikon.

Well,
The 35mm. AF mount is here for a while. There is not inovation in this area. It is clear that in sertain moment that 3-th party lenses will overtake the OEMs. Like japan and Koeran cars have overteken the western cars.
- The most profesional photogrpaher find the 24....70 range boring, but them again there are plenty of reach amateurs who are ready to pay premium price for such lens. please call me old fashion guy, but I cannot understnad what can you do with IS/VR in this focal range. One is sure the VR/IS will gratly reduce the lifespawn of lens. On the other side there lot of reach guys ready to pay $$
- What about sigma 105,150,180/2,8 OS macro - it just another hole in the wall
- what about sigma 120-300/2,8 os - again no reaction

I don't think so. I think that there is no need of VR in this focal range by proffesionals. Saying that I exclude the huge group of reach amateurs.

What "professional" photographer? They use whatever they have or need to get the job done, which may or may not be that range zoom. And does it make any difference who is buying these lenses?
What can you do with IS/VR? If you have to ask that now, there is no point answering...
IS/VR reducing the lifespan of a lens? By that implication, we might as well go back to manual focus and aperture lenses only. Very little to go wrong then.

Miro, I agree with most of your points, BUT if your customers wants something, give it to them and take their money. Otherwise they will spend them to somewhere else.
