Klaus, when did you start with Photozone? - Reinier - 09-18-2011

Hello Klaus,

I wondered when I first visited Photozone, I reckon it must have been in 1999 just when I started to pursue photography. When did you actually start with Photozone? It there a jubilee on hand in the come years?

Photozone has been great to get in tough with fellow photographers and to stay up to date with the photography business.

Thanks a lot for this great site!

Best wishes,

Reinier

Hi Reinier,

The "wayback-machine" ...

http://wayback.archive.org/web/*/http://www.opticallimits.com

... knows photozone since 1999, so your guess was a quite good one as it seems.

Here is a snapshot of the ancient layout:

... the nostalgist in me is smiling (so to say).

Depends how you define the "starting date".

The origins date back to my university time. I think I started the "lens performance This is most likely spam content" in 1995 or 1996 as some sort of project in order to check out this strange new thing called the internet. That was the time of Mosaic and Netscape just emerged.

Initially it was hosted on the institute webserver.

I graduated in 1997 but remember that the site continued to be on the institute server for a while. At that time it was responsible for most of the institute's webtraffic I think. ;-)

I reckon that I registered the domain during 1998.

It is a commercial operation since 2005 I think.

cheers

Klaus

Ahhhh....memories! I saw the info on my old Canon Elan IIe on there. I actually miss the eye control focus! I wonder if that will ever return?

I remember photozone from the mid 90ies (somewhere between 95 and 97). Back then, I really liked it list of links (manufacturers, forums, etc) and the famous SIGnificant MAlfunctions. That was really famous and quoted on photo.net as THE reason why not to buy a certain lens brand. To this day I think it is indecent to even consider buying from them. I am still amazed that Klaus seems to have sweetened up to them and occasionally even recommends their products - Klaus how low have you become <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

I remember the site from way back; but it used to be organized very differently. Hum there was also a site in .se with some data but i can't even remember the name. I think that site had a pile of mtf; while this site had the user surveys.

Anyways I obviously like this site as it is one of the few I visit regularly; mostly because the community is very civil and helpful.

Is the Swedish site: photodo.com? Their data got moved to a British server recently. It is not as famous any more.

I'm still not fond of them either but I can't ignore the hard test data.

However, the times when the front elements fell off are probably over anyway.

Centering remains an issue but this is, by now, common across all manufacturers.
