Canon 300mm F4L IS - Normal CA wide open? - ShaunImages - 09-01-2011

I just purchased the Canon 300mm F4L IS.

I noticed that wide open in high contrast I was seeing a decent amount of purple fringing around edges. Is this normal for this lens? I tested 2 samples and both were new.

Here are some shots;

Wide open - crop of Chase Bank letters in sunlight.

Another bran new sample that was received this week;

Given the extreme conditions, and given that two new samples performed identically, I think it's time to stop worrying. Don't you think? <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

That looks to be normal, yes... Image is over exposed anyway, with correct exposure the light intensity of the bright letters will diminish and so will the PF.

In normal use it should not be a problem... and if some slight PF would appear in an image anyway, it is very simple to get rid of in photoshop, for instance.

If for some reason you can't live with that this lens can show a little PF wide open, you might want to take a look at the Canon 70-300mm f4-5.6 L IS USM.
