Lumix X-lenses not up to Leica standard - joachim - 08-31-2011

HI,

The BJP reports an interview with Panasonic, stating that the new X-lenses can not be Leica branded, since Leica doesn't approve of the electronic trickery they are using:

To me it is a bit surprising. I so far understood that the Leica branded 10x zoom on my TZ-3 also relies on electronic trickery to reduce distortion and CA to acceptable level. Weell, maybe this is about system lenses only then.

Or one from the department of lame excuses (aka marketing <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />).

I think they are stuck around 1950.

Initial samples do not look good.

Lenstip samples never look good, since they always use the lowest sharpening setting available.

I have to agree on that, since I have looked at the new Sony and Samsung samples available there in the past few weeks. I have no idea why they do this: you just get to see how strong the AA filter is.

- excuse me? (re. the A77's samples at lenstip - off topic here? - maybe, maybe not) - (and sorry but i don't speak samsung copies - fridge problems you know <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />) - but we must be looking at different things -

now i don't want to promote lovely lenstip overly, as opposed to other excellent sites (well, this one other excellent web site <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />) but, at least the pictures shown at LT usefully show what the sensor is capable of on a difficult grey day on subjects that have fine and course detail, light and dark, head to toe -

accepting that LT adds lowest sharpening, if one is not happy with that and then one adds just a wee little sharpening to what they show, you might find that there is plenty of detail in skin texture and (imo) minimal noise for a difficult grey day - ie. for me, good results for that sensor - problem comes if it becomes impossible to see detail no matter what you do -

so i think that these are most useful types of samples to show the quality of any camera/sensor under less than ideal conditions . . . no? . . . although on such a day, we don't get to see the compressed white faces that another site elsewhere has shown on its face samples for a certain camera . . . but i jest . . .

Try looking at their 45/1.8. They look great.

Well, I still wouldn't call them great, but certainly a lot better. However, that's probably because the E-PL1's lowest sharpening setting is already applying more sharpening than the latest Panasonic cameras.

When you look at reviews of EF- or F-mount lenses which contain RAW-converted samples with zero sharpening applied, you cannot really call those images "great" IMO. Their AF-S 35/1.4 review is probably a good starting point.
