Not stellar, but good, especially for the price.

With all the user reviews I was expecting more. And the Tamron is slightly better. Disappointing IMHO.

It may not tick all the boxes, but in use it's a nice lens (on DX in my case). Subjective quality in the lower half of the zoom range is good enough to mean that this lens often goes for outings when the F/2.8 stays at home due to it's weight and bulk.

I might be old-fashioned (well I'm certainly old) but I have less confidence in independent lenses because they are reverse-engineered. Will the Tamron work perfectly with future Nikon bodies?

In my book, it's an excellent lens below 150 mm, and a good enough lens above. No, it's not perfect, and it took me three samples to get one in proper working order. But as a lightweight travel telephoto, it's certainly worth the money (and hassle). Just MHO.

IIRC only the communication protocols are reverse-engineered, certainly not the optical formula.

I have no idea but compatibility issues with 3rd party lenses are extremely rare in the past ~5 years. Sigma is a good example. In the past it had so many that it was actually nicknamed SIGnificant MAlfunction but in the last 5 or so years all was well. Tamron? Such problems were extremely rare throughout their history. And besides, Nikon's own history in that regard is not exactly flawless.
