Nikkor AF 85mm f/1.8 D - xiaomeng - 05-10-2011

85/1.8d is a good lens. And the resolution at 1.8 is big softer than 2.8, on d90 or d700. The pz tests seems not obvious difference (1981 vs 2087).

It's the next FX review scheduled for publication.

I guess the stars will same as EF 85/1.8: 3.5, 3, 5. <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

The AF-D 85/1.8 will get a higher optical ranking than 3.5 stars. However, we just internally discussed the rating for the Ef 85/1.8 and decided to lift it to 4 stars.

Both are affordable gems in each line-up... The Nikon more of a hidden gem, the Canon being quite a popular choice.

The EF 100/2 is also a very nice lens. But Klaus didn't review it in FF.

if you are not that "fault-finder" type you will not regret the buy. I use 85/1,8 on D700 and i am a happy user. of course it has drawbacks:

- the highlists (circles, i do not know the correct word) in the background are edged from 2 or 2.2

- the bokeh can be a bit nervous between 1,8-2,5

and that is all. all other things made me happy:

- sharp at any aparture

- enough contrast wide open, perfect from 2,5

- low CA of any kind (can be seen on very very contrasty areas...)

- AF is accurate and quick

- C-AF works flawlessly, i get contuniously perfect results (walking people, 2-3 meters+ distance)

I used the AF 85/1.8D on the D700 for about 2 years and would describe it like wise.

f/2.5 is a very good starting point for portraits with this lens. The bokeh is smoother than wide open, the sharpness and contrast gets very good and the depth of field is "thin enough".

For portraits I set the aperture some where between f/2.5 and f/4 and it never let me down.

I sold it only because I switched to the AF-S 85/1.4G.
