Weird report, R5 overheating is fake, it's a deliberate software limit.. - toni-a - 08-14-2020 https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/news/canon-eos-r5-overheating-is-fake-these-are-artificial-software-limits-says-report What do you think? Already Canon disabeled features via firmware in their cameras. 300D was a "castrated" 10D and plenty of functionality was restored via a hacked firmware.. If true, is it ethical from Canon RE: Weird report, R5 overheating is fake, it's a deliberate software limit.. - Klaus - 08-14-2020 Extreme temperatures are reducing the lifetime/increasing the defect rate. Customers won't be happy to have the camera failing just outside of warranty either. Thus being cautious rather than over-confident has its merits. Hmm .... I've been reading around including the strip down ..... it's been established that the sensor is not the overheating problem ..... and the processor doesn't have a thermal pad as such .... .. however, the Rams do and sort of overlap slightly onto the edge of the processor ........ other than that there's little sign of any heat sinking ..... (the Z7 for example has a thermal pad squeezed between the processor and a substantial aluminium plate for heat dissipation attached to the rear of the camera)) ... ..... there is also much speculation about the CF express cards being a limitation though ..... as when removed the camera's so called overheating problem goes away ......... .. exif shows that the camera is heating up but not to any level that would be detrimental to the sort of chips found in modern day laptops ...... ..... one user who dabbles in astro-photography has been doing "dark frame" measurements which are used to subtract noise from stacked images ...... he has published graphs using the exif data showing the increase in "noise levels" over time, as temperatures rise, noise rises by 24% when whichever components the exif is measuring, reach around 61° ...... yet according to him after the camera is turned off for just a few minutes the exif showed temperatures dropped to normal running temps in spite over the continued overheating warning ...... something strange there !! Well worth looking at this thread ....... 62° max sensor temperatures before shut down ..... but 72° temperatures after being stored in a meat safe at 0.4°C it ran for an hour ...... (shades of the Goodfellows? ) https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4511691 .... my test of the D500 in 4K video mode showed the body to get quite hot after half an hour ...... with it's lesser bit rate and the 1.5X crop would lead one to expect less heat would be generated ........ .... yet the R5's external body temperature remains unchanged so Canons magnesium body dissipation claims make zero sense ...... ..... whether it's thermal protection, running time protection, or their own "professional video camera range protection" system ....... that is causing the issue will no doubt be discovered by those who have a strong interest in such matters ...... ...... there's a lot of those now demanding answers!! RE: Weird report, R5 overheating is fake, it's a deliberate software limit.. - wim - 08-15-2020 It appears to depend on the CF Express card as well - some do better than others do. Oh, and a few minutes of 8K video appeared impossible to edit on an iMac Pro, conversion to an editable format ran for over an hour .... Those reporting back on still camera use all say that it is an excellent camera, great DR, great regarding noise, awesome AF. Kind regards, Wim RE: Weird report, R5 overheating is fake, it's a deliberate software limit.. - davidmanze - 08-15-2020 Things are coming to a head now ..... watch this video !! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fh5o06d7Bc0 This although not being proof in itself shows to some extent how Canon is manipulating the overheating warnings ...... The ball is now in Canon's court ..... RE: Weird report, R5 overheating is fake, it's a deliberate software limit.. - davidmanze - 08-21-2020 After a R5 body strip down and the removal of the memory battery, claims are made that the overheating warning goes away and the camera can do a second round of 8K for another 20 minutes ....... meanwhile there is no real sign of overheating ........ ......... leading to conclusions about timer limitations rather than heat control ......... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvCtFfdg_qY Sony must be loving all this ...... their designers are probably whistling away merrily whilst designing more than adequate heat sinks for their new A7R.IV 8K ready ......... EOSHD, and the Baidu guy stripping the Canon are known to be fake news creators. And now the link to a YT-er, with 12500 subscribers and less than 10,000 views, who is totally against Canon as well? I am pretty sure Canon is maybe a little overanxious with regard to temperature control, adn the marketing department went OTT with the 8K etc. video stuff. However, the R5, for video, is an excellent 4K 30, 4K 60 shooter, and a 4K 60 Super-35 DGO shooter without temeperature issues. Those temperature limitations only come in with HQ modes, 8K, and 120p. As long as you limit yourself to short bursts of those, things are just fine. And even then, most of the problems can be overcome by using an external recorder, like the Atomos. BTW, the temps rise to 64C before limitations are acted upon - this probablky shows that Canon is conservative, as always. A camera design like the R5 can never be a fulltime or professional replacement for a proper video-oriented camera, as it is not specced like a video camera, and not built like one either. You'd need to get a proper video camera at twice the cost or more without all the accesories required to properly use it. When it comes to stills, which is the real intended use for a camera designed like the R5, it gets into Sony A9 territory, but has double the MP. Anyone I know that the people who use it (mainly) as a stills camera, are extremely happy with it. I don't think we have to list specs again at this stage Wim .... we all have the T shirts ......... and no one's saying they're not great either. ......... but all that aside ........ I want to see if Canon has deliberately crippled the video section under the guise of overheating ......... this is the crux of the matter! ....... if that turns out to be the case ...... they have a lot of answering to do to their customers ....... what I don't understand though is, it's only Canon users who defend this strategy ...... as if somehow they are benefiting from it ..... when in reality they're losing out ...... quite big time too. Perhaps you have to learn to roll over and and play possum to shoot Canon? RE: Weird report, R5 overheating is fake, it's a deliberate software limit.. - Brightcolours - 08-21-2020 What I don't understand, Dave, is the trolling going on? RE: Weird report, R5 overheating is fake, it's a deliberate software limit.. - wim - 08-22-2020 Ok proof that EOSHD is making stuff up: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4513397 Kind regards, Wim |
