Nikon Z9 - mst - 03-10-2021
Well, it's official then, F-mount is probably dead
No big surprise, sure. Personally, I'm slowly adopting the idea of following that mirrorless path...
RE: Nikon Z9 - davidmanze - 03-10-2021
I doubt if it is signaling the complete death of the F mount pe se ....... I think Nikon will still produce another "token" DSLR or two (replacement for the D850 =D880 .... D580 = D580 ) ..... ????
..... and maybe a lens or two ......
........ before the DSLR rolls over into a ball and dies!
....... nothing indicating any specifications for the Z9 (which we already knew was in creation)
...... no Mps count ......... no FPS count ....... and no indication of what type of electronic shutter ........ (it better have a 10 million dot EVF @240 images per second ) ..... in my dreams .....
..... so just Nikon waving out of the window really to let us know they're at home ? ....... and I'll wave my mirror back at Nikon ...........
......... I hope that they put in some powerful processors with a margin to up the game with FWs ......... as and when Nikon get's fully on top of all this Mirror-less malarkey ........

In the economic climate that the camera market resides in, it just doesn't make any sense to maintain more than one system.

Well, there are no official specifications (other than that is has a stacked sensor, which is all about readout speed and potentially offers quite some processing power at sensor level already), at least not the kind of details we're all waiting for. But there's a somewhat solid set of rumors that looks promising and there have been interviews, where between the lines one could read that the Z9 is the next big thing after the D6 (and expected to outperform the D6 in many ways). Plus the rumors about some long tele primes... even though they are probably going to be even more expensive than the current long FL primes.
We all know Nikon is struggling a lot. Even without corona, they would probably not have enough resources to keep developing and releasing products for both mounts.

While I mostly agree - in this case if Nikon introduced another mirror body they would be maintaining existing customers - this isn't quite the same as developing a line of new lens/camera technology in hope of attracting customers.
To be honest I think Nikon waited too long to switch and is likely to dissipate in the relatively near future. Canon is on better footing since cameras dept was much smaller relative to the size of the company overall health.
But to be honest we will know for sure when the future arrives.

I agree, the number of MLCs out there at this time from "Canikon" compared to the overall quantity of existing working DSLRs is relatively small ...... so the modest DSLR user with a small collection of glass may not want to ditch his system and stump up $2-4,000 just to add one or two lenses to his collection ....... his money is likely earmarked for the Iphone 22.
...... not to mention how Canikon will be eager to clear their existing stocks of cameras and lenses from warehouses and transform it into useful cash ......
..... so the DSLR market albeit soon doomed , still has a transitional period which Canikon needs at this time to recuperate their previous production investments.
...... let's face it, camera companies will be looking at every which way to bring money into their coffers!
