Hi guys,
I'm trying to find out if I can do infrared photography with a stock 5Dmk2. I have an IR filter but when I use that I just get a black image, as if all light is blocked. I couldn't find much on infrared photography with teh 5Dmk2 on the internet so I wa shoping people here can help me out.
Thanks
That sounds normal so far. The camera sensor is sensitive to IR, but that is normally not desired when taking normal photos so there is a built in filter to block it. When you add the "IR filter" that blocks visible light and only passes IR. After the two fight it out, there is enough IR left to make an image but you need more exposure.
You need to increase the exposure a LOT. Looking at a random old test shot I have, I was using 2 seconds f/8 ISO1600 on a 50D and Hoya R72 filter. That was in semi-cloudy sunlight. Of course you may need to vary that for your exact circumstances. Also try live view as that can give an image for you to see to compose with and may help with the metering too.

I tried life view, but all I get is a black screen. On auto exposure it takes a second or so, but no image appears.

With an unmodified DSLR, the exposure times are usually more in the range of 10 to 30 seconds.

I forgot to ask, where were you shooting? You need a good source of IR light, and the most readily available one is the sun. Find a sunny day and take some test shots outdoors.
